What Is an Efficient Deckhand (EDH)?

An Efficient Deckhand is an essential member of a ship’s deck crew, responsible for a wide range of duties that keep the vessel running smoothly and safely. They are the foundation of the deck department, working under the direction of the bosun and officers.

Responsibilities of an Efficient Deckhand

On any given day, an EDH might be tasked with:

  • Standing watch and lookout duties
  • Steering the ship at the helm
  • Performing maintenance on deck equipment
  • Handling mooring lines and anchoring operations
  • Assisting with cargo operations
  • Participating in emergency drills and procedures

It’s a physically demanding job that requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.

Career Paths for EDH Certificate Holders

Earning your EDH certificate is the first step towards a range of maritime careers. Many deckhands go on to become Able Seafarer Deck, a higher-level rating position. Others use their sea time and experience to eventually become officers, working their way up to positions like Chief Mate or Master.

EDH’s are in demand across the industry, from commercial cargo ships to offshore oil rigs, research vessels, and luxury yachts. It’s a ticket to work anywhere in the world.

Who Should Take the Efficient Deckhand Course?

The EDH course is designed for aspiring deck officers who are progressing toward their MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) 3000gt Certificate of Competency. Before you can be issued an EDH certificate, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Hold at least one of the following qualifications:
  • MCA accepted Yachtmaster Offshore / MOY 200t Limited
  • Yacht Rating Certificate and a steering certificate
  • Navigational Watch Rating Certificate
  • Boat Master Licence Tier 1 or 2
  • Tug Rating Certificate and a steering certificate
  • Have completed a minimum of 6 months seagoing service on vessels over 15m in length

Note: You may attend the course before meeting all requirements, but the EDH certificate will only be issued once all criteria are satisfied. Additionally, the EDH certificate must be held for 18 months before your OOW CoC can be issued.
