Register For The November 2025 MCA-Approved Efficient Deck Hand Course with PYT Cape

Are you ready to take the next critical step toward your Officer of the Watch (OOW) 3000gt certification?

Time is running out. Our final Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course for 2025 runs from 24-28 November in the stunning maritime setting of Simons Town, Cape Town, and there are only 6 spaces remaining!

Why This Course Matters

The MCA-approved Efficient Deck Hand course isn’t just another maritime qualification—it’s an essential requirement for anyone pursuing their Yacht Officer of the Watch (OOW) 3000gt Certificate of Competency. Without it, you cannot obtain your CoC, no matter how much experience you have or how well you perform in your oral exam.

But here’s what makes this course particularly valuable: it’s designed to meet Merchant Navy Training Board standards for all vessel types, not just yachts. This means the skills and knowledge you gain are universally applicable across the maritime industry, opening doors far beyond the superyacht sector.

What Makes PYT Capes’ EDH Course Stand Out?

Over five intensive days, you’ll receive comprehensive theory and practical training at SAMTRA’s facilities in Simons Town—one of South Africa’s most historic naval locations. This isn’t a tick-box exercise. You’ll be assessed through:

  • Written examinations that test your theoretical understanding
  • Practical skills demonstrations that prove your competency
  • Continuous evidence gathering throughout the course
  • Full attendance and active participation requirements

The course covers the complete range of Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiencies (KUP) mandated by the MNTB, ensuring you’re prepared for real-world maritime operations across all vessel types.

Is This Course Right for You?

To enrol, you need to meet specific prerequisites: Below we list some of them, visit the EDH course page to find out more.

  • You must be at least 17 years old, have completed a minimum of 6 months seagoing service on vessels over 15 meters, and hold one of the following qualifications:
  • An MCA-accepted Yachtmaster Offshore/MOY 200t Limited
  • A Yacht Rating Certificate and a steering certificate
  • A Navigational Watch Rating Certificate
  • A Boat Master Licence Tier 1 or 2
  • A Tug Rating Certificate and a steering certificate

Remember: you must hold your EDH certificate for 18 months before your OOW CoC can be issued, so timing is crucial for your career progression.

Don’t Miss This Opportunity

With only six spaces left for November’s EDH course, and no additional courses scheduled until 2026, this is your last chance to complete this essential certification before the new year. Missing this intake could delay your career progression by months or even push your entire certification timeline into the next year.

The course fee is $1,000—a worthwhile investment in your maritime career that opens the door to officer-level positions and significantly expanded opportunities across the global maritime industry.

Secure Your Place Today

Spaces are filling fast, and once they’re gone, you’ll be waiting until 2026 for the next opportunity. Don’t let this be the qualification that holds back your maritime career.
