Course Information
This course is an IYT (International Yacht Training) course presented by PYT Cape at their facilities in Hout Bay. On the successful completion and passing of the course, the candidate will be eligable to receive a Certificate of Competency allowing them to operate commercial yachts up to a maximum of 200 gross tons and up to 150 nautical miles from the coast during day or night hours. It is an MCA approved course and according to the MCA’s MSN 1858 (section 2.6), requires no further endorsements to be used within the yachting sector.
The course consists of 1 week of intensive theory training, with exams having to be written and passed on each of the subjects lectured. Subjects covered are Collision regulations, Meteorology, Tides and Currents, Navigation and chart work as well as Business and Law.
After the successful completion of the theory week, the candidate will then complete a second week of practical powerboat training. It is assumed that students have the necessary experience and skills to handle a twin-screw power vessel at this level. The practical week then ends off with a practical exam, whereby an external practical examiner will assess the candidate’s ability to be in command of a power-driven vessel
