Course Information

This course is an IYT (International Yacht Training) course presented at our training centres in Cape Town in Hout Bay, Simons Town and now also in Knysna.

Please note, at our training centre in Knysna, the Master of Yachts (200gt) Unlimited course offering is for the Theory Only Course in October 2025.

On the successful completion and passing of the course, the candidate will be eligable to receive a Certificate of Competency allowing them to operate commercial yachts up to a maximum of 200 gross tons and up to 150 nautical miles from the coast during day or night hours. It is an MCA approved course and according to the MCA’s MSN 1858 (section 2.6), requires no further endorsements to be used within the yachting sector.

The course consists of 1 week of intensive theory training, with exams having to be written and passed on each of the subjects lectured. Subjects covered are Collision regulations, Meteorology, Tides and Currents, Navigation and chart work as well as Business and Law.

After the successful completion of the theory week, the candidate will then complete a second week of practical powerboat training. It is assumed that students have the necessary experience and skills to handle a twin-screw power vessel at this level. The practical week then ends off with a practical exam, whereby an external practical examiner will assess the candidate’s ability to be in command of a power-driven vessel up to 200 gross tons.

The minimum requirements for entry to this course are the following:

  • A minimum of 3000 miles logged. (These miles cannot have been obtained on a single crossing but must also include at least 5 passages of 60 miles during two of which the candidate should have been either the watch keeper or captain.)
  • 50 days on board a vessel (a day is a 24-hour period)
  • 30 hours on watch at night while underway, 6 hours of which should have been in the position of watch keeper or captain.
  • A VHF radio operators’ licence
  • A valid seaman’s medical
  • Basic STCW certificates.
