STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping)
The course involves both theoretical and practical training in the handling of a small power driven vessel.
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 sets minimum qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships and large yachts.
In order for anyone to be legally allowed to work aboard any vessel, they must be in possession of the basic STCW certificates. These include the following
:Personal safety and social responsibility, Elementary first aid, Personal survival techniques (Sea survival), Basic fire fighting and Basic security awareness.
These modules are run over 10 days. The first week includes PSSR, First aid and security awareness. These modules are run at the PYT Cape classroom facilities in Hout Bay. The second week consists of 3 days of fire fighting training which is conducted at Red Watch in Tokai and then a further 2 days of sea survival training at SAMTRA in Simons Town.
