Small Powerboat and RIB Master

A “Rib Master course” refers to a training program for individuals seeking to become proficient in operating rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). RIBs are a type of small powerboat characterized by their inflatable collars or tubes around the hull, which provide buoyancy and stability.

In this context, “RIB” stands for “Rigid Inflatable Boat.” These boats are popular for various purposes, including search and rescue, military operations, recreational boating, and professional use in the maritime industry.

The Rib Master course provided by IYT (International Yacht Training) is MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) approved, meaning it meets the standards set by the MCA for training in the operation of RIBs. This course likely covers a range of topics related to RIB operation, including safety procedures, navigation, maneuvering techniques, and maintenance.

Course Information

The Rib Master course is an IYT ( International Yacht Training) course presented in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

The course involves both theoretical and practical training in the handling of a small power driven vessel. The theory training takes place at classroom facilities in Hout Bay while the practical component takes place from the Hout Bay harbour and will take students into the beautiful bay, surrounded by mountains and the famous Chapman’s Peak drive.

After successful completion and passing of the course the qualification allows the candidate to legally operate vessels up to 15m in length with unlimited horsepower up to 20miles from a safe haven, day or night, with no accommodation on board. It complies with the MCA’s (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) small commercial vessel code.

This qualification is a very useful one to have when looking for a position onboard a vessel, or for those already working on board vessels. It allows the holder of the qualification to take command of smaller vessels and tenders on short trips from the parent vessel to shore and back, or possibly the taking of guests on short day trips.
